Choosing keywords for your web pages are one of the crucial tasks in On-Page SEO. You can either choose short tail keywords or long tail keywords. Short long tail keywords are composed of one to two words while long tail keywords are short phrases composed of more than two words.
Here are some reasons why I recommend selecting long tail keywords:
- Long tail keywords are usually not competitive so ranking for these keywords is much easier than for short tail keywords.
- Searchers nowadays tend to search using long tail keywords as they produce more relevant results. For example, suppose you were searching Google for tips on how to do keyword research. If you just type in “keyword research”, you would see something like this:Figure 1
- However, if you type in, “how to do keyword research” the search results would better address what you want to know, as you can see in the image below:
If you compare the two search queries, you will notice that you are given more relevant results if you search using the long tail phrase. For searchers, this saves time, and for website owners, they get to target people who are more likely to be interested in what the content of their site.
- Long tail keywords can be a combination of two shorter keywords, so while you are building links for the long-tail phrase you are also building them for the shorter keywords.
